Roadtrips are the best remedy for a restless spirit.

My friend Ryan and I had planned out this trip through the mountains of NC and VA, ending on the coast of North Carolina. The trip had occupied our conversations for weeks before at Mugs, our local coffee shop, and they were not going to end anytime soon.

We had been working together on small creative projects for a few months before, so we felt that a roadtrip was the perfect way to quench our thirst for adventure, get a better idea of what we wanted to make our lives into and to create as much digital content as we could in the next week. So, we packed our bags, threw in our boards and strapped our bikes to the back of my seasoned ‘04 Honda Accord- it was time to explore.

On our way up to one of my favorite spots in North Carolina, we talked about images we had dreamed of in our head and began our search for the best spot we could find to take the shot along the way. Turn after turn on the windy roads of the Blue Ridge Mountains finally led us to a spot that rounded the mountain, with a beam of sunlight that backlit the road. We grabbed our boards and our cameras and made sure the road was clear. “This is it,” I thought. Ryan put the viewfinder to his eye and I turned into the mountain. This was exactly what we needed: getting that picture and taking those runs.. it was a breath of fresh air. The photo would go on to occupy my mind for the next few years. I loved it, but I didn’t yet have the words to describe why. I guess it was a good thing we had a lot of time to think on this roadtrip. It’s easy to forget how simple life can be when you don’t have any distractions, but being on the road has a subtle way of reminding you.

Well, that’s how it started- this trip went on to be the catalyst in my photographic journey. Ever since then, I’ve just been looking for the next turn into the mountains.

Come along, share the journey and I hope you enjoy the pictures!
